      EVENT DETAILS
NPC Headliners Book Event: Tim Alberta - "American Carnage"

Politico’s chief political correspondent Tim Alberta will discuss his new book, AMERICAN CARNAGE: On the Front Lines of the Republican Civil War and the Rise of President Trump, at a National Press Club Headliners book event July 24 at 6:30 p.m. To understand Trump’s victory in the 2016 election is to see him not as the person who created political polarization and partisanship, argues Alberta, but rather as its consequence. The Obama presidency and its progressive agenda and changing demographics fired up the Republicans, Alberta explains, but left it split into two factions: one led by absolutists like Jim Jordan and Ted Cruz, the other led by pragmatists like John Boehner and Mitch McConnell.  Based on original reporting and hundreds of exclusive interviews (many with key players like Trump, Paul Ryan, Cruz, Boehner, McConnell, and others) American Carnage makes the case that the ensuing clashes between the two factions undermined the GOP's internal structures and allowed for "an outsider to crash the party." This event will take place in the Club's conference rooms, and will feature a moderated discussion with the author, an audience question-and-answer session, and a book signing. Tickets cost $5 for members of the National Press Club and $10 for non-members. When purchasing your tickets online, you will also have the option of buying a book. Books will be available for pick up and signing at the event. You may also purchase a copy of the book at the event. Proceeds from the book sales will benefit the National Press Club Journalism Institute, the non-profit affiliate of the Club, so the Institute asks that you leave all outside books at home.
