James Mann - The Great Rift: Dick Cheney, Colin Powell, and the Broken Friendship That Defined an Era

Dick Cheney and Colin Powell worked closely together during the George H. W. Bush administration, advising on policy through successful wars in Panama and Iraq. When they returned to government service in 2001 under George W. Bush, however, the two quickly fell out, turning from allies to adversaries. Drawing on dozens of original interviews and deep research in presidential archives, Mann, a fellow in residence at the Johns Hopkins University School of Advanced International Studies and the author of books including Rise of the Vulcans, charts the two men’s different sensibilities and ideologies regarding national security in a world fraught with terrorism and traces the effect of their differences on recent American history, both in foreign policy and within the Republican Party.
