Azra Raza - The First Cell: And the Human Costs of Pursuing Cancer to the Last — in conversation with Dr. Robert Gallo

The nation declared war on cancer in 1971. Since then, new drugs and innovations in treatment have succeeded in keeping people alive for additional weeks or months, but usually in great discomfort, all while holding overall survival rates at 1960s levels—even as the annual cost of treating this disease has risen to $150 billion. In this urgent critique of both medicine and society, Raza, the Chan Soon-Shiong Professor of Medicine and director of the MDS Center at Columbia University, draws on her experience as an oncologist and the widow of a leukemia patient to show why and how we must change our approach to this terrible illness. Raza will be in conversation with Robert Gallo, a pioneering biomedical researcher whose work helped lead to the discovery of HIV as the cause of AIDS.
